Jamie Daskalis is a runaway success in the culinary world. Along with her late father, she opened Johnny D’s Waffles and Benedicts in 2014 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It became a favorite of both locals and tourists, boasting some of the most innovative menu items around. Since then, she’s opened two more locations, plus a wine bar concept restaurant, The Tasting Room on 9th. Along the way, she’s picked up a load of accolades, including “Best Chef” by South Carolina Woman Magazine and Grand Strand Magazine and been nationally televised on The Food Channel’s “Chef Swap.” She also has her own line of sauces and spices. And she’s the author of the cookbook “Making it Delicious.” It’s a resume that would impress just about anyone. But what really sets her apart is the work she dedicates herself to in the name of those with autism.
Her son, James, was diagnosed with autism at age three. Since that time, Jamie has become an unyielding advocate for the autistic, and she’s made it a personal mission to help children in a variety of ways. At Johnny D’s, she hosts Sensory Friendly events, accommodating children with environments that are less stimulating and overwhelming. Her restaurant also participates in CAN (Champion Autism Network) Cards. It allows a family to discreetly give a card highlighting the needs of an autistic diner to the server. During Autism Awareness Month, Jamie creates a campaign highlighting a different child or adult with autism every day. It offers a glimpse into how each person is uniquely special while also educating her thousands of followers on autism and how it affects families. During this time, she also raises money and donates it to two local organizations that support autistic individuals – SOS Health Care as well as the aforementioned Champion Autism Network.
Overall, the city of Myrtle Beach has a goal to become one of the most autism-friendly vacation destinations. And it’s in no small part due to Jamie and her selfless determination as she demonstrates how to be a true champion for others.
