DAVID BARRANCO

Chappy’s Deli
Montgomery, AL

If you walk into a Chappy’s Deli in the Montgomery, Alabama area, you might see the words, “Serve with Love.” It’s more than a saying. It’s a cherished mantra that’s at the heart of the food and service provided at the beloved restaurant. But nobody embodies that spirit more than founder and Managing Partner David Barranco.

David started the New York-style deli with his brothers 35 years ago. Since then, the restaurant has grown and expanded, now touting five locations. But what David might be best known for is his giant heart and dedication to service. The list of causes Chappy’s Deli backs might be lengthier than a college textbook. For 15 years, they have helped an organization called Feeding the Multitudes Ministry deliver meals to community seniors on Thanksgiving Day. Chappy’s Deli is also involved with the Joy to Life Foundation and the Cancer Wellness Foundation to provide mammograms, transportation and access to medication to breast cancer patients who may not otherwise be able to afford it. Other charitable organizations include Hope Inspired Ministries and The Life House. Both are workforce development nonprofits that train adults, some of whom Chappy’s Deli employs during their training and transitional time. That’s My Child, a nonprofit that mentors the youth through arts, education and work-force development, Chappy’s Deli also helps sponsor. Chappy’s provides support for the local arts community, including the Alabama Dance Theatre, Montgomery Ballet and Alabama Shakespeare Festival. Chappy’s Deli also donates to various other organizations including Valiant Cross Academy, Life on Wheels and more. But that’s not all.

The centerpiece of their generosity is a yearly event called Breakfast for Babies. For the last 17 years, David and the Chappy’s team organized a drive-thru breakfast fundraiser where patrons receive a hearty morning meal in exchange for a donation. All the proceeds go to the Baptist Health Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), helping fund critical equipment and care for newborns. In 2024, they served over 5,000 breakfast boxes and raised over $73,000.

When you hear the warm praises of those who work with him, or the tear-inducing stories of parents who now hug a healthy, grown child, you see a man who cares deeply, a man who has a passion to prop others up, and a man who lives to serve with love every day.
